Educational Programs

The Society is committed to making Sycamore history available to as many people as possible.  This is achieved by offering a variety of programs - monthly meetings, brown bag lunches, exhibits, tours, and school and scout presentations. Some of the highlights include a guided walking tour of the historic district on the first Sunday of the month during the summer, Annual Elmwood Heritage Cemetery Walk, participating in the Passport to Adventure program, and the creation of the Sycamore History Project for Sycamore students.

Passport to Adventure
Summer is a wonderful time to visit museums, historical societies and nature centers in DeKalb County.  The theme of exploration is central to the Passport program.  While the focus is on third through sixth graders, children of all ages are encouraged to participate.  The program officially begins at the beginning of June and ends in the beginning of September.

How do you participate?  First, pick up your Passport to Adventure.  The passports are available at participating museums (see www.dekalbcountypassport.org for the location near you) or at your local library.  Passports will be available at most libraries when children sign up for summer reading programs.  This year the passports include 19 participating sites.  Two new locations include Egyptian Theatre and Haish Memorial Library Building in DeKalb.

Go to the location of your preference, take part in a special activity, and then your passport will be stamped.  Visit three sites and earn a certificate of participation; visit five and earn a special prize.

The Sycamore Historical Society offers presentations about Sycamore History and tours to adults groups.  Call the Historical Society to schedule an appointment.
