October Brown Bag Lunch: Sycamore Fires

One of the most impressive fire’s in Sycamore’s history occurred at Hagen’s Ace Hardware Store in 1964.  The Sycamore Historical Society’s October 4 Brown Bag lunch will explore this story.  This store was located on the first floor of the Alida Young Temple which housed the Masonic Temple and Odd Fellows Lodge.  An 8mm film that Ralph Joiner shot the day will be shown as part of the Brown Bag lunch.  A number of fire fighters that worked at this fire also will be on hand to talk about what they remember about the fire that day.

Forty years later, Sycamore experienced another devastating fire at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  A current Sycamore fire fighter will show a DVD of the fire and share his recollections of the event.

The Sycamore Historical Society’s Brown Bag lunch series is held on the first Thursday of the month.  The programs are free and open to the public, donations are appreciated.  Coffee and cookies are provided.  For more information call 815-895-5762 or email sychist@tbc.net
