Sycamore 101

After a full spring and summer of events related to Sycamore’s sesquicentennial, the celebration is winding down.  Do you feel like you did not take full advantage of learning more about Sycamore’s history?  It is not too late.  The Sycamore History Museum is presenting an encore performance of their Elmwood Cemetery Heritage Walk on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. as part of their Sycamore 101 series.

Although the event will not be held at Elmwood Cemetery, photos of the grave sites and mausoleum will be part of the evening’s presentations.  “This is a great opportunity to celebrate Sycamore’s history.  The people selected for the program are great examples of community leaders – people who in different ways shaped our city today” explained Michelle Donahoe, executive director.

Presentations include:  the Cemetery Gates, which were recognized by the Illinois Historic Structure Survey as the best representatives of iron cemetery gates in the state; the Buzzell Family – Orrin and Eliza Buzzell were early settlers of DeKalb and Kane counties; the Davis Sisters – opened their own stationary store in 1880 becoming the first women businesses owners in Sycamore; Reuben Ellwood – was Sycamore’s first mayor in 1869; Ester Mae Nesbit – was a talented artist and first woman war veteran; and Clifford Danielson, a banker, and Marjorie Danielson an educator and both were community leaders. A short talk about Soldier’s Row will also be given by Tom Oestreicher.  Over 800 veterans are buried in the cemetery.
